How to Run the Loop

Okay. You understand the loop. Experience, meaning, response, result, reinforcement. You've seen how a dishwasher can confirm "I have to do everything myself" for the four-hundredth time.

By Amy Sanders

Now I want you to actually use it. Not understand it. Use it. So here's exactly how I walk a woman through her own loop, and it's six questions.

First, don't fix it

When you notice yourself getting activated this week, your instinct is going to be to fix it immediately. Calm down. Push through. Make the feeling stop.

Don't. The moment of activation is information, and if you rush to fix it you lose the data. An experience isn't one clean circumstance, either. It comes with a whole pile of emotions. Let the pile sit there for a second. Then run the questions.

The six questions

1. What happened?

That's your experience. Just the facts. Not the story, the facts. "My husband loaded the dishwasher." "She didn't text back." "He hesitated when I said the price." If you can't say it in one plain sentence, you're already inside the meaning.

2. What did I make it mean?

This is the meaning, and it's the question that opens everything else. "He's doing it wrong." "She's upset with me." "I'm too expensive." Say it out loud if you can. It usually sounds more dramatic out loud than it did in your head, which is useful.

3. How did I respond?

Your response. Emotionally, physically, and in what you actually did. Got irritated and rearranged it. Sent two more texts. Threw in a bonus and offered a payment plan.

4. What did that create?

The result. He stopped helping. She got annoyed at the extra texts. You closed the sale at a lower price and resented it.

5. What did that reinforce?

The reinforcement. "See, I have to do everything myself." "See, people pull away from me." "See, I can't hold my value." Notice the word see. Your brain loves that word. It's the sound of evidence landing.

6. Which identity is running the loop?

Is it the one I've learned to be, or the one I'm becoming?

Ask it plainly. And if the answer is the old one, don't shame it. Shame strengthens the exact pattern you're trying to change. Just get curious. Of course my brain went there. I know this pattern.

Then one rep

Once you know which identity is running, ask one more thing: what's one response I could choose right now that would create evidence for the woman I'm becoming?

One response. I'm not asking for ten things. One little rep in the right direction.

Leave the dishwasher alone. Don't send the third text. Hold the price. That's it. You don't have to feel like the new woman to do it. You can do it while your whole body is arguing with you. The response comes before the belief, and every rep is a piece of evidence your brain can't argue with.

Why the order matters

Most women jump straight from "what happened" to "what should I do." They skip the meaning entirely. And the meaning is the only step where choice lives.

You can't change what happened. You can't skip the result. But the meaning you attach is yours, and it's been running on autopilot for years. Running the loop slowly, in order, puts the meaning back in front of you where you can see it. That's the entire reason this works.

What this looks like over time

At first you'll run the loop three days after the fact. You'll be driving somewhere and go, oh, that's why I did that. Great. That's awareness.

Then it's three hours later. Then thirty minutes. Then five. And eventually you catch it while it's happening, right there in the kitchen, with the meaning half-formed in your mouth. That's the window getting wider. That's what growth actually looks like. Not never having the pattern. Catching it sooner.

Write the six questions on a note in your phone. What happened? What did I make it mean? How did I respond? What did that create? What did that reinforce? Which identity is running the loop?

Then pick one area this week where you keep getting the same result, and run it. Don't judge. Just catch.

Frequently asked questions

What are the questions to run the Default Identity Loop?

Six questions, in order: What happened? What did I make it mean? How did I respond? What did that create? What did that reinforce? Which identity is running the loop, the one I've learned to be or the one I'm becoming? Then one more: what's one response I could choose right now that creates evidence for the woman I'm becoming?

Why ask "what did I make it mean" instead of "what should I do"?

The meaning is the only step in the loop where choice is available. What happened is already done, and the result follows from the response. Jumping to "what should I do" leaves the old meaning untouched, so the response stays automatic. Naming the meaning first is what makes a different response possible.

What if I can only see the pattern after it's over?

That's normal, and it's still progress. Running the loop after the fact is awareness, and the window between trigger and catch gets shorter with every run: days, then hours, then minutes, then in the moment. Measure growth by how soon you catch it, not by whether it still shows up.

Do I need to know my Enneagram or Human Design to run the loop?

No. The six questions work on their own. Knowing your Enneagram can make question two faster, because it tells you which fear tends to shape your meanings, and Human Design can inform the aligned response you choose. They sharpen the loop. They aren't required to run it.

How do I run the loop when I'm in the middle of it and can't think?

That's the hardest moment and the one this is built for. Start with question one only: what happened, facts only. Saying one plain sentence pulls you a half-step out of the activation. If you can't get there on your own, that's exactly what The Mirror is for: somewhere to go right then and say, here's what's happening, help me see it.

Catch your loop while it’s running

Reading about the loop is a start. Catching it in your own life, in the moment it runs, is where it shifts. The Mirror walks you through my Unblocked Method one real situation at a time, and your Human Design and Enneagram take it deeper when you know them.
